The Story

While many adventurers spend thousands chasing the world's most famous trails, Samir has spent years proving that the most extraordinary places on earth are the ones nobody is talking about yet.

Where did the love for the outdoors come from?

I think it started when I was very young. I always loved nature, mountains, forests, and spending time outside more than staying in the city. Even before I had any real hiking gear, I was already exploring and walking long distances just because I enjoyed the feeling of freedom and calm that nature gives me.

When did it go from something you loved to something you lived?

Around 2020, I started taking it more seriously. I began buying my own equipment, camping more often, planning longer hikes, and learning more about outdoor life. Since then, adventure became a big part of who I am — not just a hobby.

For someone just starting — what three pieces of kit actually matter?

First, a reliable headlamp — light is extremely important outdoors. Second, a lightweight water filter or purification tablets. Clean water can save you in many situations. Third, a good power bank. Phones and GPS devices become critical during long hikes.

You don't always need expensive gear to start exploring.

What was the first time Algeria really tested you?

One of the first experiences that really tested me was doing long mountain hikes with very little comfort, carrying heavy gear for many hours. I remember finishing completely exhausted but also feeling proud — I realised my body and mind were capable of much more than I thought. Mentally, it taught me that difficult moments always pass.

You ended up on the Mauritanian Iron Ore Train. What even is that?

It was one of the craziest and most memorable experiences of my life. The train is massive, loud, uncomfortable, and completely unpredictable. Once you are on it, you just accept the journey as it comes.

How do you mentally prepare for something where you control almost nothing?

Mentally, I prepare by accepting discomfort before the adventure even starts. I know there will be dust, exhaustion, uncertainty, and long hours without comfort. But that's also what makes the experience unforgettable.

You were in the Algerian Sahara testing PYRA. What's that environment actually like?

It was an amazing experience. The Sahara feels completely different from any other place. During the day, the heat is intense, and at night everything becomes silent and cold. Testing the PYRA gear there was interesting because the environment is very demanding.

I spent time walking through the dunes, camping under the stars. One of my favourite moments was simply sitting at night in complete silence with nothing around except sand and a sky full of stars.

Did the temperature swings catch you off guard?

I expected it to be difficult, but experiencing it in real life is different. The heat during the day can drain your energy very quickly, and the cold at night feels surprising after such a hot day. In the desert, small mistakes can become big problems very fast.

Has it ever not gone to plan?

Sometimes bad weather, changing routes, or transportation problems create unexpected experiences. I remember trips where the original plan completely failed — but because of that I discovered new places or met amazing people along the way. That's something I love about adventure: sometimes the best moments are unplanned.

How has adventure changed you as a person?

Nature made me calmer and mentally stronger. When you spend long hours hiking or camping alone in the mountains, you learn patience and discipline. You also learn to appreciate simple things like water, food, silence, and rest.

It also changed the way I see life. In nature, everything feels more real and simple.

And that kept pulling you further?

I think the mountains and the desert themselves inspired me. The more I explored Algeria, the more I realised how many wild and beautiful places exist here. Seeing huge landscapes, sleeping outside, walking for hours with no one around — all of that made me want to go further and experience more extreme adventures.

You've said "Adventure is for everyone." Do you actually mean that?

A lot of people think adventure is only for athletes or people with expensive gear, but I don't believe that. Adventure can start with a simple walk in nature or a small camping trip close to home. You don't need to climb the highest mountain in the world. The important thing is being curious, exploring new places, and stepping outside your comfort zone.

What do you want to leave with fellow hikers?

Don't wait for the perfect moment to start exploring — it probably never comes. Start with what you have, even if it's small. Nature has a way of teaching you things that normal life cannot teach.

That's where growth happens.
